New Development with Asian Carp Underscores the Complexity Surrounding the Issue

January 14, 2004 -- As concerns grow in and around the Midwest, the Great Lakes and other parts of the country about the threats presented by Asian Carp, a new development shows the depth of the complexity of this aquatic invasive species issue.

Biologists in various parts of the country have clearly expressed their concerns about the natural resource impacts and the need to take sweeping actions to address these concerns. However, with the discovery of an advertisement showing the availability of live Big Head Carp in the Chicago-land area, the Asian Carp issue takes on a much different dynamic. In addition to acknowledging the obvious resource concerns about the spread of this species, this advertisement unveils the human dynamic that surrounds the Asian Carp. So, in order for resource management professionals to effectively address this issue, we need to think in holistic terms. This translates into committing resources toward understanding the various values for such an invader and developing subsequent strategies to address the human dynamic surrounding the attraction to sell such a species. Check out the attached advertisement to see what the natural resource community is facing regarding the emerging human dynamic associated with this issue.
