IAFWA Aquatic Invasive Species Project News
May 20, 2004 -- As part of a project funded by the International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, four regional coordination workshops are being held around the country to enhance coordination between state and federal agencies, regional entities, and other organizations concerned about and have authority to regulate ANS and enforce laws dealing with the issue. More specifically, these workshops will...
a) assist the regional associations as they develop an official position for advancing policy and enforcement needs; and
b) provide the states with a platform to prioritize needs and coordinate regional ANS policy and law enforcement actions.
The project is funded through a 2003 Multi-state Conservation Grant awarded to the Fisheries and Water Policy Committee of the IAFWA for a 3-year project to help address ANS communications issues. The project is unique in that it involves the cooperation of multiple partners including the IAFWA, the Four Regional Associations, four pilot state fish and wildlife agencies and their respective in-state partners (AZ, MO, NH, SC), and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The focus of this project is to help states initiate efforts to increase their capacity to address Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) issues within four pilot states through the development of comprehensive communications strategies and collectively help the Regional Associations and the IAFWA develop a stronger voice and greater capabilities when addressing regional and national ANS efforts.
